08/31/11. Texas has had over 63 days of extreme High temperatures. On average over 103 degrees. Extreme Heat! As a result, Texas is in a Drought. No Rain. With this heat, Water is truly a commodity. So far the cost has been to texas $6 billion dollars. Texas cattle and horses have been suffering the most. Texas grass lands are all dried up. Ranchers have been selling off their herds. Beef prices are still high due to the International demand for beef. So ranchers have been lucky in that arena. Unfortunately the cost to feed cattle and horses is very expensive. Hay is going between $65 and $85 dollars per bundle. Very expensive. Texas ranchers are keeping their prized cows and bulls but selling the rest of the herd before they become ill from the extreme heat. Horses on the otherhand are being sold for $15 to $35 dollars per head. Some ranchers are just letting them go wild. To expensive to keep them. As a result horses are roaming nearby towns looking for water and food. With bundles of hay being used to feed cattle/live stock in the summer, ranchers fear that hay will be scarce in the winter months when this commodity is used the most to feed their herds. Bad situation. More to come, stay tune.
